Officially, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals popularly known as SDGs came into force On 1 January 2016 and they are meant to shape national development plans over a period of 15 years.

The goals range from ending poverty and hunger to responding to climate change and sustaining our natural resources, food, and agriculture.

The Sustainable Development Goals succeeded the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which were introduced in the year 2000 for least-developed countries to improve health and education systems and alleviate poverty among others.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) had 8 goals with 21 targets and were supposed to be achieved by 2015.
