According to FAO, Nigeria is the largest fish consumer in Africa, and among the largest fish consumer in the world with about 3.2 million metric tons of fish consumed annually, but with a total fish production of close to 1 million metric tons per year, leaving a total deficit of 2.2 million metric tons of fish consumption to importation.
One major challenge for this deficit is attributed to the lack of modern technology in the production of fish as well as small-scale fish farming.
With a coastline of 853km and over 14 million hectares of inland water, and a population of over 2.6 million people, Nigeria currently has both the home and market for modern and large-scale fish production.
There is a vacuum in fish farming both in the mechanization of fish farming and in large-scale production to meet demand in Nigeria. Nigeria has the potential to do more in fish production, how can this vacuum be filled?
