As a professional advocating for better post-harvest management, field visits often serve as a stark reality check. These images, captured during one of my recent visit, I consider them not as a farm visit – rather a food crime scene as it reveals a disturbing truth: spinach, a nutritious powerhouse, subjected to reckless disregard and utter neglect.
From farmers neglecting proper handling and packaging, while traders exacerbating the situation with careless practices and haphazard stacking in uncovered vehicles, and the produce even being tossed onto the ground to ‘tire-trampled packing’, the journey of this spinach from farm to market is riddled with mishandling.
The result? Wilted, damaged, and potentially unsafe produce, the process is also leading to massive losses. But the cost extends beyond the lost produce. Consumers are paying more for a subpar quality, while farmers face the squeezed margins. It’s a clear lose-lose for everyone.
Now to solve this issue, we have move beyond the blame game. We need a complete food system upgrade with a holistic approach that prioritize proper training and regulations at every step of the supply chain:
* Farmers: Got to level up & start investing in proper handling and sorting to minimize spoilage.
* Traders: Plays the crucial role and has to start cleaning up their act!! Implementing stricter hygiene and handling practices is not just necessity but non-negotiable for a safer food chain.
* Consumers: Has to speak up!! We got to demand better quality and transparency as well as start supporting responsible producers.
Together, we can and have to rewrite this story. Let’s demand better from all stakeholders and advocate for a food system where quality and safety are non-negotiable. We all deserves a food system that:
– Values quality
– Reduces waste
– Ensures everyone gets a fair deal
