Growing Trees Network, Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has donated 156 fruit, medicinal, and forestry tree seedlings to the Tema General Hospital (TGH).
It includes fruit seedlings such as pawpaw, coconut, and guava; medicinal trees which include noni, moringa, and Aidan fruit (prekese) and forestry trees like acacia.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Christopher Boatin, the Chief Executive Officer of Growing Trees Network said the donation formed part of its vision to create awareness and sensitization to the public on the importance of trees as they were essential to having a healthy environment.
Mr. Boatin stated that when more trees were planted, it would help prevent land degradation and deforestation and also, help fight climate change and restore soil fertility.
He mentioned that it was important to educate people more on the importance of trees for more trees to be planted.
Dr. Richard Anthony, Medical Director at the Tema General Hospital who received the seedlings added that apart from the greenery, which gives the serenity of nature, trees played an essential role by giving humans and animals oxygen to breathe in.
He explained that trees also served as a windbreak during a rainstorm or other forms of natural disaster.
He commended Growing Trees Network Ghana for taking the bold initiative to aid in the planting of trees in Ghana and at the hospital.
