Mayram's story: Succeeding back at home in Senegal

Traditionally a destination for migrants, Senegal has now become a country of transit and emigration. Young people leave rural areas in search of employment opportunities and a better future, and face many risks during their journey. For those who decide to return, reintegration is not always easy.

This video tells the story of Mayram Ka, who has just come back to Senegal after following her husband to Cote D’Ivoire. She found adjusting to life there too difficult and decided to return home.

Mayram is one of the 120 young returning and potential migrants who took part in training sessions on agribusiness that helped them kick-start and sustain their agricultural activities.

The training was organized by the support offices set up by FAO together with local authorities. These offices help migrants reintegrate in rural communities and find alternatives to migration.

The aim is to make migration a choice, not a necessity. This project was funded by the FAO´s Flexible Voluntary Contribution (FVC). In more than 80 countries, this FAO´s initiative empowers rural communities, improves their livelihoods and food security, and promotes inclusive agrifood systems.
