Mr Eric Kontomah, the Kintampo North Municipal Director of Agriculture in the Bono East Region, has appealed for the enactment of bye-laws to control cattle herding and crop grazing in the municipality.
He expressed worry about the growing conflicts between farmers and cattle herders who allowed their animals to graze and destroy crops in the area, saying that the situation now threatened the security of the area.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Kintampo, Mr Kontomah said the directorate received about 30 reported cases of cattle grazing and destruction of farms in 2025 estimated about GH¢100,000.
He said this year, 28 reported cases of extensive destruction of rice, maize, cassava, and yam farms estimated at GH¢80,000, saying that a bye-law was required to bring the situation under control.
Mr Kontomah said the bye-law ought to push the cattle rearers to establish ranches for their stray animals too.
In a separate interview, Mr Albert Akwesi Afful, the Officer in-charge of the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate of the Municipal Assembly described the activities of the cattle herders and their animals in the municipality as unfortunate.
He said the level of destruction of crops was alarming and needed urgent attention, saying that if nothing was done immediately, the situation could escalate and disturb the prevailing peace of the municipality.
