Iseguri Initiative introduces Chia cultivation to Nkwanta communities

The Iseguri Initiative has launched an exciting pilot project in the Oti Region. As part of the project, Chia seeds have been distributed to the  Asomdwe climate-smart change in the Nkwanta community. The goal is to introduce smallholder women farmers in Nkwanta South and North to this new crop.

The long-term aim is to expand Chia cultivation across the northern regions. For this year, the focus is to test germination rates and observe how the local soil responds to the seeds. Because Chia is ideal for dry-season farming, the project has been strategically timed to begin at the end of the rainy season so the crop can mature as the dry season sets in.

This initiative has been made possible through the generous support of Eva Lydeking .

During the distribution, Ms. Rejoice Selorm Azameti, the WIAD Officer for Nkwanta South, received the seeds on behalf of the women’s groups. She expressed her deep gratitude to the Iseguri Initiative and the donors. She also urged the beneficiaries to take excellent care of the seeds, noting that this is a “pass-it-on” project. Their success, she said, will determine whether other communities in the region receive similar opportunities in the future.

The women were thrilled to receive the seeds and have promised to work hard to ensure the project thrives. Weki Agenes also expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Iseguri Initiative and the donors in the Basari language.
