Activista Ghana, a youth network, has called for communal support towards the preservation of water bodies and vegetation cover to address issues of climate change in the country.
Mr Issahaku Abdul Latif, the Northern Regional Coordinator of Activista Ghana, who made the call, urged communities to complement the government and non-governmental organisations efforts to preserve the environment.
He said, “The impact of climate change is not selective but communal, which demands the involvement of all stakeholders.”
He was speaking during a follow up session by Activista Ghana’s team to Savelugu to assess the impact of its sensitisation campaign launched last year and dubbed: “Community sensitisation on the impact of climate change and its mitigation actions”.
Beneficiary communities included Kpalyogu in the Savelugu Municipality and Dalun in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region.
The event, supported by ActionAid Global Platform Ghana among other partners, was aimed at seeking first-hand information on how communities operationalised the campaign and the need to adopt strategies to sustain the environment.
Mr Ibrahim Zakaria Abu, the Cell Coordinator of Activista Ghana, Savelugu Municipality, said the campaign had greatly influenced the decisions of residents in the Municipality, adding “This sensitisation campaign needs to be sustained to safeguard our environment.”
He appealed to community members to prioritise environmental safety measures.
“Our access to clean water and safe farmlands depends so much on how we preserve the environment,” he said.
Dalun Tuuna Adam Yussif, a Sub Chief of Dalun Traditional Area, donated a five-acre land to the team to plant trees and called on other stakeholders to support the climate change campaign.
Activista Ghana presented some seedlings to the various communities for planting to enhance the preservation of the environment.
