Akatsi North DCE honours farmers, pledges support for climate-smart agriculture

Mr Bless Kodjo Katamani, the District Chief Executive for AKatsi North has extended his gratitude to all gallant farmers for their tremendous contributions towards food security and growth of the economy. 

He said Agriculture remained the vehicle for the country’s transformational agenda which would ensure food security, sustainable employment, and others.

Mr Katamani gave the appreciation during the 41st District Farmers Day event at Avevi, a farming community in Akatsi North.

He said this year’s theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” reflected the focus of President John Dramani Mahama.

“You will agree with me that ‘Feed Ghana’ as highlighted by the theme, is a game changer in our Agricultural sector aimed at reducing poverty among farmers, and attracting more youth and women into farming.” 

He further stated that with the initiative, the government plans to establish farmers’ service centres, creation of farm banks, and the promotion of urban farming among others.

Mr Katamani indicated that plans were far advanced to a non-functioning Dam at Ave Afiadenyigba located within the District in other to produce enough water for dry season farming.

“When these dams are operational, vegetables will be produced to sell at good prices to those who live in the cities. Let us be in readiness for this great project,” he said.

On climate change challenges, Mr Katamani revealed that his outfit would continue to collaborate with the Department of Agriculture to train farmers on climate-smart practices, promoting high-yielding and resilient crop varieties, and providing early warning systems for pests and diseases.

The rest are, sensitising farmers on soil conservation and management practices, and supporting organic farming among others.

Mr Katamani, among other key policies, also encouraged farmers to engage Agriculture Extension Officers in all their farming activities to boost yield in the midst of using best farming methods and practices as a means of making agriculture a profitable venture.”

He cautioned all to desist from bush burning habits since that would become a potential threat to vegetation cover, crops, and livestock.

The event, which recorded several exhibitions by farmers from the District, saw a total of 11 awardees including institutions and schools given their various awards.

Torbokor Afatsawu Agbawu, a farmer from Korve was adjudged the overall District Best Farmer and was presented with items such as a tricycle, cutlasses, wellington boots, a spraying machine, bags of fertilizer, and a certificate.
