The Crop Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-CRI), has acquired an advanced methane measurement instrument to help measure and analyse methane emissions in the agricultural sector.

The state-of-the-art gas facility, will also help the Institute to develop a scale for methane emission reduction technologies within the agricultural sector and help in biogas management.

The facility was procured under the Agroecology and Circular Economy for Ecosystem Services (ACE4ES) Project of the Multi Technology Park (MTP), which is being implemented by the CRI.

Dr. Kwaku Onwona-Hwesofour Asante, the Project’s Principal Investigator, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the procurement of the instrument was facilitated through co-funding collaboration between Climate Change and Clean Art Coalition (CCAC) of UNDP and CSIR-CRI.

Dr Asante said the instrument is designed to measure trace levels of methane with high precision and real time accuracy.

It also represents a significant leap in methane qualification capabilities.

He said the Multi Technology Park, would be able to leverage on the instrument to validate the methane emissions reduction strategies in the agricultural sector, since it would help to conduct more research and empower farmers with actionable insights.

Additionally, it would help integrate technology into agriculture practices and give tangible benefits to local farmers.

He said, sustainable agriculture, coupled with good health and productivity would achieve resilience, adding that the instrument would serve as a catalysts for transformative agriculture practices and bridge the gap between research, policy and practice.

This, he added, would contribute meaningfully to global climate change and improve livelihoods.

Dr Asante said the MTP was poised to lead the transformation of agriculture for a sustainable low carbon future.
