EU launches major forest restoration projects in Ghana
The European Union in Ghana (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable forest management in Ghana with the launch of four forest restoration projects across Ahafo, Bono East, Upper East, and Western Regions.
EU launches major forest restoration projects in Ghana The initiative aims to restore 5,000 hectares of degraded forest landscapes under the EU Sustainable Forest and Cocoa Programme, with a total investment of GH₵31 million (€2.4 million).
Implemented by the European Forest Institute (EFI), the projects support community-based and not-for-profit organizations in both High Forest and Savanna ecological zones. Restoration activities include agroforestry, tree planting, farmer-managed natural regeneration, and integrated landscape management, while building the capacity of 20,000 farmers and rural households.
The projects emphasize empowering women and youth, strengthening community resilience, and promoting sustainable livelihoods in forest-dependent areas. The initiative brings together government institutions, local organizations, and international partners to ensure long-term environmental and socio-economic benefits.
Through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, these EU-supported efforts are expected to make a significant contribution to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and Ghana’s national and international environmental commitments.
