Farmers cautioned against bush burning to safeguard environment

Farmers have been advised to stop burning weeds and dry bushes to prevent air pollution and damage to the environment.  

bush fire in GhanaMr Emmanuel Boapeng, Project Coordinator, Ghana Shea Landscape and Emissions Reduction Project at Forestry Commission, who gave the advice, said bushfires contributed to reducing soil fertility as well as destroy crops, livestock and habitat for wildlife in forestry reserves.

He gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tamale.

Mr Boapeng said bushfires could also contribute to climate change by releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

He encouraged farmers to use alternative methods for managing weeds in the transformation of organic fertilizer to improve soil fertility.
