Mr Blay Armah Nyameke, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, has distributed 9,000 birds to poultry farmers and residents under the Government’s poultry support programme and urged beneficiaries to nurture the birds carefully to ensure profitability, food security and employment.
Mr Nyameke noted that Ghana spent an estimated GH¢2.84 billion on frozen chicken imports in 2025, making poultry one of the country’s major food import items and contributing significantly to the national food import bill.
Speaking at a distribution ceremony held at the Youth Centre in Sekondi, the MP encouraged beneficiaries to form cooperatives and collaborate to expand their poultry businesses.
He also urged constituents, regardless of political affiliation, to take advantage of government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and creating economic opportunities.
Mr Harvey Smith Annobil of the Department of Agriculture at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly advised farmers to adopt best poultry management practices to ensure healthy growth and maximum productivity.
He urged beneficiaries to provide the birds with adequate feed, vitamins and proper veterinary care.
“Feed them appropriately, give them vitamins and report to the veterinary for any emergency care and advise…that way, you will have a good yield.”
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Government for the intervention and said the programme had the potential to reduce poverty and improve household incomes.
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, a component of the Feed Ghana Programme, is designed to distribute millions of birds and provide feed support to households and poultry farmers across the country.
The programme aims to increase Ghana’s poultry self-sufficiency from 12 per cent to more than 75 per cent by 2028 and reduce foreign exchange expenditure on poultry imports.
