Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister has highlighted the region’s agricultural potential and invited investors to take advantage of opportunities in the sector.
At the 41st Farmers’ Day celebration, held at the Ho Sports stadium, on Friday, Mr Gunu expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for bringing the event to the Volta Region, which demonstrated the importance of agriculture in the area.
He also paid tribute to farmers, fishers, and other value chain actors for their contributions to Ghana’s food security and economy.
He emphasised the region’s competitive advantages, including diverse agro-ecological zones, untapped water bodies, and strategic proximity to regional markets which were often of high potential.
Mr Gunu said the Volta Region was opened for business and ready to offer opportunities in large-scale farming, food processing, value addition, irrigation, and aquaculture, among others and that its Regional Coordinating Council was ready to provide facilitation, technical support, and a conducive environment for investors.
Mr Gunu mentioned that the vision was to position the Region as Ghana’s next agro-industrial power hub, competitive, export-oriented, and youth-led with initiatives including strengthening district agri-business development platforms and digital extension centers.
He called for renewed commitment to supporting farmers with policies, financing, technology, and infrastructure to drive agriculture development.
The Regional Minister welcomed investors and development partners to the area for real agriculture business.
“Today’s celebration aims at inspiring greater collaboration, innovation, and investment in the agricultural sector, and it is being attended by His Royal Majesty, Torgbe Afede XIV, who has been instrumental in promoting enterprise development in the region,” he said.
Mr Gunu explained that the Volta Region’s agricultural sector had the potential to feed Ghana and supply surplus produce to the West African sub-region and beyond and emphasised the importance of partnerships and aligned policies to achieve the targeted goals.
He said that the event was a tribute to the hard work and dedication of farmers and fishers and their contributions to Ghana’s food security and economy and appealed for the right support for the Volta Region to become a major player in the country’s agricultural sector.
The 41st Farmers Day celebration was a resounding success, with stakeholders commending the government’s efforts to promote agriculture development while the event provided a platform for networking and collaboration among stakeholders.
