41st Farmers’ Day: Agortime-Ziope to honour 10 gallant farmers
Ho (V/R), Nov. 26, GNA – The Agortime-Ziope District in the Volta Region will on Thursday, November 27, honour 10 distinguished farmers as part of activities marking the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration.
The district event, scheduled to take place at Keyime, a predominantly farming community, forms part of efforts to acknowledge individuals and institutions whose contributions continue to drive agricultural development in the area.
The event is brought forward by virtue of the national farmer’s day being hosted by the Volta Region.
Mr Mawuli Abusah, Agortime-Ziope District Director of the Department of Food and Agriculture (DoFA), told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that preparations were far advanced for a colourful and inclusive celebration.
He explained that the award scheme was carefully designed to recognise excellence across several sectors of agriculture, reflecting the district’s diverse farming potential.
He said the categories included the Overall Best District Farmer, District Best Crop Farmer, District Best Livestock Farmer, and the District Best Female Farmer and Processor.
Other categories to be honoured were the District Best Differently-Abled Farmer, Best Senior High School in Farming, Best Junior High School in Farming, and Best Primary School in Farming.
Mr Abusah further disclosed that the celebration would also acknowledge the Best Faith-Based Organisation or Institution in Practical Agriculture, as well as a Special Award for the Best Differently-Abled Farmer, sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Agortime-Ziope, Mr Charles Agbeve.
Mr Abusah noted that the awards would highlight not only the contributions of individual farmers, but also the efforts of educational and religious institutions that were helping to nurture a new generation of agriculturally skilled youth.
Chiefs and people from Adzonkor, Kadzinkor, Klokpaga, Wudzedeke, Sowlada Kofe, Astrulume and surrounding communities are expected to grace the occasion, which is anticipated to draw a large gathering of farmers, community leaders and stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
The Agortime-Ziope District, alongside other districts in the Volta region, is observing the Farmers’ Day celebration on Thursday, November 27, ahead of the National Farmers’ Day ceremony scheduled to take place in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, on Friday, December 5.
The District Director commended farmers for their resilience despite challenges such as climate variability, input costs and post-harvest losses, and encouraged them to continue adopting improved farming practices to enhance productivity and food security.
He said the award winners would receive certificates, agricultural tools, farm inputs and other incentives to support their work, stressing that the Department of Agriculture remained committed to strengthening agriculture as the backbone of the district’s economy.
