In a bid to increase cocoa yields and improve farm productivity, contributing our quota towards the attainment of AgRes 300k ideals, cocoa farmers in the Daboase District are embracing the use of poultry manure as an organic fertilizer. This innovative approach has seen cocoa farmers enthusiastically adopting the practice, purchasing poultry manure in large quantities for their farms.
The initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable cocoa production, has underscored the importance of poultry manure as a valuable resource for cocoa farmers. Not only is poultry manure an affordable alternative to inorganic fertilizers, but it also offers numerous benefits for improved soil conditions, higher crop yields, and environmental sustainability.
It is important to mention that one of the primary advantages of poultry manure is its affordability. Compared to inorganic fertilizers, poultry manure is a cost-effective option, making it an attractive choice for cocoa farmers. Additionally, the widespread availability of poultry manure in the region has ensured that farmers have easy access to this valuable resource.
The use of poultry manure as an organic fertilizer also offers significant environmental benefits. By reducing reliance on inorganic fertilizers, cocoa farmers can minimize soil degradation, prevent water pollution, and promote biodiversity. Furthermore, poultry manure is rich in organic matter, which enhances soil structure, improves water retention, and supports healthy microbial activity.
Cocoa farmers in the Daboase district have reported significant improvements in crop yields since adopting poultry manure as a fertilizer. The nutrient-rich manure has enhanced soil fertility, promoting healthy plant growth and development. As a result, farmers are experiencing increased cocoa yields, improved bean quality, and enhanced overall farm productivity.
Several cocoa farmers in the region have shared their success stories after adopting poultry manure as a natural fertilizer. One such farmer, Mr. Samuel Essel Annan, a farmer at the Amankesease community, reported a significant increase in his cocoa yields after using poultry manure on his farm. “I was skeptical at first, but after using poultry manure, I saw a remarkable improvement in my cocoa yields,” he said.
- Nitrogen: Poultry manure contains a significant amount of nitrogen, which is essential for plant growth and development.
- Phosphorus: Phosphorus is another essential nutrient found in poultry manure, which plays a critical role in plant development and yield.
- Potassium: Potassium is an important nutrient that helps plants grow and develop, and poultry manure is a rich source of this essential element.
- Organic Matter: Poultry manure is rich in organic matter, which enhances soil structure, improves water retention, and supports healthy microbial activity.
- Micro-Nutrients: Poultry manure also contains a range of micro-nutrients, including zinc, copper, and manganese, which are essential for plant growth and development.
To ensure the continued success of this initiative,
The District will continue to raise awareness among cocoa farmers about the benefits of using poultry manure as a natural fertilizer.
Ensure that poultry manure is widely available and accessible to cocoa farmers.
Provide education, training, and capacity-building programs for cocoa farmers on the curing and effective use of poultry manure.
And finally Continuously monitor and evaluate the impact of the initiative to identify areas for improvement.
