The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr Alexander Nketiah, has advocated for the establishment of a wine industry in Ghana.

Speaking at the launch of Martin B Wines during this year’s Valentine’s Day celebrations, he highlighted the growing importation of wines from other countries and the increasing interest among Ghanaians in wine consumption.

Martin B Wines, which comes in varieties such as Red Blend, Sweet Sparkling White, Reserve Pinotage, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is produced in South Africa.

However, Mr. Nketiah expressed a strong desire for Ghana to move beyond importing wines and start producing its own.

“All these wines are of great quality from South Africa. They stand out compared to others on the market. But my only wish is that they were produced in Ghana. My prayer is that as these wine sellers continue to import wines, we can find ways to start growing grapes, fermenting them, and producing our own wines right here,” he added.

Mr. Nketiah emphasised that grapes thrive in mountainous regions, making places like Aburi, Amedzofe, and Abetifi potential hubs for grape farming.

“It is possible to grow them here. When you visit some mountainous areas like Aburi, Amedzofe, and Abetifi, where the weather is cold, research has shown that grapes can grow there.

“I believe that if we focus on grape cultivation, we can establish a wine industry, which will also bring numerous benefits to Ghana’s tourism sector,” he added.

He called on importers and investors to consider investing in grape farming to improve varieties that can be grown on a commercial scale.

He also noted that developing a wine industry in Ghana could create jobs for the unemployed youth by building a value chain that includes grape farming, wine production, packaging, and distribution.

The Chief Executive Officer of MB Ventures, importers of Martin B Wines, Ms Mavies Boakye, revealed that the company had a long-term vision to produce wines in Ghana.

“Ghana has vast arable lands, and we intend to capitalise on this to start production and create employment for the youth,” she said.

She further explained that Martin B Wines was launched on Valentine’s Day to celebrate the uniqueness of love and to provide a premium yet accessible option for all social gatherings.

“Our wines are made from different grape varieties and have a low alcohol percentage, making them suitable for everyone,” she added.

While advocating for the growth of Ghana’s wine industry, both Mr Nketiah and Ms Boakye advised against irresponsible drinking and encouraged consumers to drink in moderation and avoid drink driving.
